2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS were begun delivered last month at El Toro Air Station in Irvine, California (North America) with its first 20 examples. The lucky owners picked up their new cars in a race circuit and logged lap time with Porsche driving instructors.

This GT2 RS is powered by 620-hp 3.6 litre 6-cylinder boxer engine boosted by two turbochargers with variable turbine geometry exclusive to Porsche in its combination with a gasoline engine drives the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. The 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS weights only 1,370kg and takes 3.5-secs to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h (0 to 200km/h in 9.8 secs, 0 to 300km/h 28.9 secs) while its top speed is 330km/h.

Porsche High Performance Cars manager Andreas Preuninger was on hand to oversee delivery of the car he spent the last four years developing as a skunkworks-style project. According to Preuninger, he and the engineers who developed the 997 GT2 and GT3 RS started the project during testing of the regular GT2 at the Nurburgring. Essentially, the design brief was to combine the stripped-down nature of the GT3 RS and the power of the GT2 to build the fastest 911 possible.

Before the car went into production, Porsche engineers logged nearly 435,000 testing miles and another 80,000 hours of engineering time.  The end result is a lightweight Porsche 911 GT2 RS that set a 7:18 lap time around the Nurburgring.
