The third-generation MINI is finally here! Both Cooper and Cooper S were unveiled in Kuala Lumpur earlier this week. For the Malaysian market, 4 variants will be made available – Cooper, Cooper Chilli (upgrade pack), Cooper S and Cooper S Wired (upgrade pack). Price starts from RM178,888 for Cooper, RM198,888 for Cooper Chilli, RM228,888 for Cooper S, and RM248,888 for Cooper S Wired.
The new edition MINI takes on new hallmark design features, new generation of engines for increased driving fun and efficiency as well as new innovative networking technology and functionality. “The new MINI is built completely new from the ground up and is derived directly from the BMW Group’s outstanding development expertise. The car will now, more than ever before, set new benchmarks within its segment as MINI now features new engines and new MINIMALISM technologies for better efficiency in terms of fuel consumption and emissions as well as new MINI Connected technologies for better connectivity, raising its profile in the evolution of automotive history.” said Dr. Gerhard Pils, Chief Executive Officer of BMW Group Malaysia as he introduced the new MINI.
What’s the difference between the Cooper and Cooper S under the hood? – The new MINI Cooper is a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine which delivers a maximum output of 100kW/136hp with torque peaking at 220Nm. The Cooper sprints from 0-100km/h in just 7.8seconds with a top speed of 210km/h. Average fuel consumption is about 4.7L/100km.
The Cooper S is equipped with a 2.0-litre 4–cylinder engine which delivers a peak output of 141kW/192hp, and a maximum torque of 280Nm. Sprints 0-100km/h in 6.7seconds and able to reach a top speed of 233km/h. Despite the impressive performance, average fuel consumption still stands at only 5.4L/100km.
Both 3-cylinder and 4-cylinder engines comes with MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology that power variants of the new MINI. These petrol engines include turbocharging, direct fuel injection and variable camshaft control on the intake and exhaust side (double VANOS). All variants are paired with the same six-speed automatic gearbox (Cooper S variants gets paddle-shifts located on the steering wheel).

In its interior offering, the base MINI Cooper variant offers Cloth Firework Carbon Black Upholstery with Hazy Grey interior surfacing, Chrome Line Interior, manual air-conditioning, MINI Radio Basis with Bluetooth interface and Sports multifunction leather steering wheel with rain sensor and automatic lights control. The MINI Cooper Chilli variant, meanwhile, offers the addition of Leather Cross Punch Carbon Black Upholstery with automatic 2 zone air conditioning, MINI Radio Visual Boost and sports seats for driver and passenger.

In the MINI Cooper S variants, the base MINI Cooper S offers Leather Cross Punch Carbon Black Upholstery with Black Checkered interior surfacing, Chrome Line Interior, headliners in Anthracite, interior rear view mirror with anti-dazzle, automatic 2 zone air-conditioning, MINI Radio Visual Boost, John Cooper Works multifunction leather steering wheel with rain sensor and automatic lights control as well as sports seats for driver and passenger. The MINI Cooper S Wired variant, meanwhile, offers the addition of Centre Armrest, Harman/Kardon HiFi with 12-speaker sound system as well as the added function of Voice Control.
The new MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S will be available in ten exterior paint shades, with the addition of the new MINI colours – Volcanic Orange, Moonwalk Grey, Blazing Red, Deep Blue and Thunder Grey (exclusively for the MINI Cooper S variants only). The roof, exterior mirror caps and bonnet stripes is also available in two colour options of white or black.
The MINI Cooper Chilli and MINI Cooper S Wired arrives packaged with the MINI Service Inclusive program which offers comprehensive MINI after-sales care for 3 years or 50,000KM. The program is offered on the base MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S variants at an additional RM 5,900.00. The cars will be made available at all MINI dealerships nationwide during the MINI weekend which will take place on the weekend of 12th and 13th of April 2014.
