2012 Honda Civic Type R Mugen 2.2 Debuts in UK

The 2012 Honda Civic Type R Mugen 2.2 debuted on Sep 8, 2011 at Northampton, Honda UK said in a statement that plans for the Civic Type R Mugen 2.2, including volume predictions and pricing, have yet to be finalised.

 

If you were able to recall, Honda UK and its tuning partner Mugen have built 20 units of the Mugen Civic Type R UK-Spec that producing 240HP and 213Nm @ 6,250rpm. Outrageously, of the 20 units of 2010 Civic Type R Mugen, 4 remain unsold. For that reason, this new project is developed by using one of those cars.

 

Honda Civic Type R Mugen 2.2 FN2

Compared to the standard FN2 Civic Type R, both horsepower and torque are up by 30%. The cylinder bore and stroke have been increased to 2,156cc, power output has been increased to 260HP and 240Nm @ 6,000 rpm, with Honda claiming that torque has increased across the range.

 

Mugen also created exclusively components for Civic Type R Mugen 2.2, including a more hardcore sport suspension, upgraded brakes and a performance body kit.

 

“Environmental pressures mean naturally aspirated engines are rapidly being superseded by other engine architectures and technologies,” said Hiro Toyota, vice president of Mugen Euro, in a statement. “We may never see the like of the K20 in a mainstream production car again, so felt it only fitting we mark the occasion with this special 2.2 version of the Honda Civic Type R.”

 

In addition, Honda highlight that it’s possible Mugen Euro may offer the 4 unsold Civic Type R Mugen with the reworked engine, while it is also considering offering the option of an upgrade to existing owners.

KLIMS 2010: Honda Civic FN2 Euro Type R

During KLIMS 2010, Honda Malaysia displayed an Australia Spec FN2 Civic Euro Type R as one of the show car. Since the legendary FD2 Type R had discontinued early this year, the FN2 Type R is the only Type R left in Production. The FN2 Type-R is only produced at Honda’s Swindon factory in the UK. However, we are unable to confirm whether Honda Malaysia replacing the Type R model with FN2 like what’s happening in Japan.

Although this model has been sometime, we will briefly walk-thru it. The FN2 Civic Euro Type R is offered only as a 3 door hatchback and uses a different chassis and internal layout than JDM FD2 Type R. The rear suspension is on torsion beam axle. This car is powered by de-tuned K20A engine with less performance. No Brembo callipers on the front brake. It runs on 225/40 R18 Y88 Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tyres as standard. Most importantly, the car is RON95 compatible (part of the reasons lead to less performance) due to Euro Spec.

Honda Civic FN2 Type-R Discontinued in most of Europe due to Emission Regulation

In last April 2010, Honda Japan announced on discontinuing the legendary Honda Civic FD2 Type-R due to the gas-guzzling sports car which is difficult to respond to the emission regulation in Japan. A couple of days later after Honda Japan announcement, Honda Malaysia announced the same thing to the local media since the local Type-R is fully-imported from Japan.


Yesterday, Honda Europe has announced that sales of the Civic FN2 Type-R throughout most of the Continent will cease by the end of 2010. The K20A engine that fitted on the FN2 Type-R doesn’t meet the new Euro-5 emissions standards which apply throughout the European Union.


The FN2 Type-R is only produced at Honda’s Swindon factory in the UK and production will continue for other markets including Japan. After discontinued the JDM FD2 Type-R in Japan, the FN2 Type-R went on sale earlier this year in Japan as replacement. Likely, the Type-R with K20A engine will be a legendary collection in near future.


In Australia, due to local lax emissions laws the Honda Civic Type R has been given the all clear to be sold in Australia as currently remained at the Euro-4 emissions standards.
