Sime Darby Auto Performance introduces the new Porsche Macan in Malaysia

The new Macan is the sports car of the compact SUV segment. A Porsche through and through, the Macan is setting benchmarks in terms of driving dynamics and enjoyment – both on paved streets and off-road terrain. The Macan brings together the most powerful engine range in its class with the sporty seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) and one of the finest drive systems in the world – Porsche Traction Management (PTM) in conjunction with a sporty mix of tyres, fitted as standard. Furthermore, the new Porsche model line offers a choice of three sporty chassis versions, one of which features air suspension –an exclusive in the Macan’s segment.

The sporty DNA of the Macan, as with all Porsche vehicles, is immediately recognisable in the design. Many details are reminiscent of the iconic 911 sports car and the technological bench-mark 918 model, and the Sports Utility Vehicle is unrivalled in its flat and broad profile on the road. The wraparound bonnet and gently sloping roof line accentuate the overall impression of sporty elegance and powerful dynamics. Many of the design elements have been taken from Porsche sports cars and enhanced for the Macan, making it clear to see from the very first glance that the Porsche Macan heralds the first sports car in the compact SUV segment.

The range of equipment fitted on the Macan as standard is extensive, and includes the all-wheel drive, PDK, multi-function sport steering wheel with shift paddles, large wheels, high performance audio system and an electrically operated tailgate. The list of optional special equipment offers further exclusive highlights, such as the air suspension system: The Macan is the only vehicle in its segment to feature such a system. There is also the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) system, which has been specially tailored to the Macan. This system distributes varying levels of drive torque to the rear wheels and works in conjunction with an electronically controlled rear-axle differential lock. The list of Porsche options includes the much sought-after dynamic high beam forming part of the Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus), which continuously adjusts the headlight level in keeping with the traffic ahead and any oncoming traffic. A choice of premium-quality audio equipment is available in the form of the optional sound systems from Burmester® and Bose.

A new feature in the Macan is the wraparound bonnet that creates an impressive design detail, enclosing the headlights and extending down to the wheel arches. The imposing size of the bonnet and its precision lines running to the front of the vehicle give the Macan a broad and powerful appearance, while the seamless surface of the bonnet presents a clean front to the vehicle.

The new Macan adopts the current DNA of the 918 Spyder in the form of the basic shape of its main headlights, while the sideblades at the bottom of the front and rear doors are reminiscent of the lower door seams on the hybrid super sports car. Combined with the sophisticated door handles, this makes the doors appear narrower and the sides significantly more sporty and streamlined. On the Macan S and Macan S Diesel, the sideblades are painted in Lava Black as standard. The Macan Turbo features sideblades painted in the same colour as the exterior (optional for Macan S and Macan S Diesel), adding to the classic elegance of its look. Sideblades in Genuine Carbon, available for all models as an option, add extra emphasis to the Macan’s sporty character. On the inside, the Macan is fitted with a multi-function sports steering wheel as standard, the design of which is completely new and based on the 918 Spyder.

A further design highlight on the side view is its sporty sloping roof line which creates a sharp profile and emphasises the dynamic nature of the vehicle, while the design lines running to the rear of the vehicle accentuate the broad, sculpted wings. Together with what are known as the window graphics – the edges of all lateral glass surfaces – and the shape of the D-pillar, these design lines are a nod to the design of the 911.

The rear lights on the Macan are another striking feature, boasting an extremely compact three-dimensional design and LED technology – a further reference to the 918 Spyder. On all models, the rear diffuser is flanked on both sides by twin tailpipes – round on the Macan S and Macan S Diesel and square on the Turbo. All models are available with sport tailpipes made from chrome-plated stainless steel as an option.

About the Macan

Sime Darby Auto Performance introduces the new Porsche Macan in Malaysia

The all new Macan, is a full articulation of Porsche’s commitment to challenge the limits of what a sports car can be. It features a powerful and extremely efficient in-line four cylinder petrol engine with turbocharging, 2.0 litres displacement which delivers 237 hp (174 kW). Fuel consumption is enhanced by its design: as measured in the NEDC, the fuel consumption of Macan is 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres, making it among the most efficient compact SUV in its class. Yet the Macan delivers driving performance – accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, with top speed of 223 km/h.

About the Macan S

The Macan S is equipped with a 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine delivering 340 bhp (250 kW) and also features an active all-wheel drive with an electronically controlled, map-controlled multi-plate clutch. This all-wheel drive is fitted on all Macan models. A seven-speed double-clutch transmission transfers power as required and almost without any interruption in tractive force, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds (or 5.2 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package fitted). The vehicle reaches a top speed of 254 km/h, and its NEDC* fuel consumption figures are between 9.0 and 8.7 litres/100 km, which corresponds to a CO2 emissions level of between 212 and 204 g/km.

About the Macan S Diesel

The Macan S Diesel is the economical long-distance runner of the three Macan models. Its 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine achieves NEDC* fuel consumption figures of between just 6.3 and 6.1 litres/100 km, which corresponds to a CO2 value of between 164 and 159 g/km. Nevertheless, the Macan S Diesel accelerates from 0 to 100 km in just 6.3 seconds (or 6.1 seconds with the Sport Chrono package fitted) thanks to its 258-bhp (190-kW) engine, and achieves a top speed of 230 km/h.

About the Macan Turbo

Sime Darby Auto Performance introduces the new Porsche Macan in Malaysia

As the top model in the Macan model line, the Macan Turbo is set to be the most powerful vehicle in the compact SUV segment. The 3.6-litre V6 biturbo engine, which is being used in a Porsche model for the very first time, achieves an unrivaled 400 bhp (294 kW) and catapults the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. With the Sport Chrono package fitted, it is even possible to achieve such a speed in 4.6 seconds. Although the top speed is 266 km/h, the Macan Turbo delivers NEDC* fuel consumption figures of between just 9.2 and 8.9 litres/100 km, which equates to a CO2 value of between 216 and 208 g/km.

For the first time in a new Porsche model range, all variants of the Macan feature the high- performance seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) as standard. The advantages of this transmission design include excellent start-up performance, extremely fast gear changes without any interruption in tractive force, short reaction times, low fuel consumption and outstanding shift comfort.

The PDK’s intelligent management system allows it to adapt to the required driving profile. As in virtually all Porsche vehicles that feature the PDK, there are two shift gates: On the right, the required switching level is engaged via the typical Porsche gear selector, while the left-hand gate can be engaged manually, or with the standard shift paddles on the steering wheel.
Start/stop functionality and coasting for increased efficiency.

Active all-wheel drive is part of the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system and comes as standard for all Macan models. Together with the other elements of the system – the electronically controlled, map-controlled multi-plate clutch, the Automatic Brake Differential (ABD) and Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) – the all-wheel drive looks after traction and safety.

The all-wheel drive system is one of the systems with the fastest response times on the market and its design underpins the sportscar characteristics of the Macan. The rear axle is always driven, the front axle receives its drive torque from the rear axle, and the torque is dependent on the locking ratio of the electronically controlled multi-plate clutch.

With the optional Sport Chrono package fitted, performance can be enhanced even further at the touch of a button. The package enables the chassis, engine and transmission to be tuned to an even sportier level, accompanied by a sound that is even more emotive.

The Sport Chrono package is characterised by the analogue and digital stopwatch on the dashboard, as well as the additional Sport Plus button in the centre console.

Another element of the package is the performance display on the optional Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, which provides information on the total driving time, distance travelled around the current lap or the time taken for each lap, for instance.

“Sport Plus” offers an even sportier tuning of the engine features and chassis, and switches the gear shifting strategy to racetrack mode. The PDK is now configured for very short response times, optimum shift points and torque magnification during gear changes for maximum acceleration, ensuring the vehicle delivers an even sportier response.

Also included as a component of the Sport Chrono package is Launch Control, which enables a level of acceleration similar to that required when moving off in a race. The time advantage gained in a standard sprint from zero to 100 km/h is 0.2 seconds for Macan S, Macan S Diesel and Macan Turbo models. “Launch Control” enables improved lap times and a better spread between comfort and sportiness when it comes to the vehicle handling to achieve a boost in driving pleasure.

The base price of the new Macan models starts from:-
Macan From RM 420,000*
Macan S From RM 560,000*
Macan S Diesel From RM 545,000*

Mazda Unveils All-new Mazda MX-5

The MX-5 is an iconic model representing Mazda’s vehicle-engineering philosophy―the pursuit of driving pleasure. “Innovate in order to preserve” was the motto for the fourth generation, as the development team searched for innovations that go beyond simple evolution. Environmental and safety demands are much more stringent than they were when the first generation MX-5 was introduced 25 years ago, but the fourth generation stays true to the model’s original aim of offering the pure driving fun that only a lightweight sports car can. It achieves this through the adoption of SKYACTIV technology and refinement of its appeal to the senses and sensations through which people enjoy cars

The design of the all-new MX-5 reveals another layer to Mazda’s KODO design language. The exquisite proportions make the driver and passenger stand out, and both the interior and exterior evoke the exhilaration of open-top driving. It is the most compact of any generation MX-5 so far and is more than 100 kilograms lighter than the model it replaces, promising a dramatic leap in Jinba-ittai driving fun.

As of July 2014, total production volume of the Mazda MX-5 exceeded 940,000 units and it continues to hold the Guinness World Record for the best-selling two-seater sports car. This highly-celebrated model has received over 200 awards from around the globe including Japan Car of the Year 2005-2006.

Moving forward, Mazda will continue to develop products which offer all customers driving pleasure and outstanding environmental and safety performance.

“All car manufacturers including Honda are now focusing on improving safety of our vehicles which enables people to realize the joy and freedom of mobility. It is our hope that together with organisations like MIROS and a concerted effort by all car manufacturers to build safer cars for the market, we can one day realize the dream of accident-free roads in the world,” said Honda Malaysia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Yoichiro Ueno.

Honda R&D centers in Japan and Ohio houses two of the world’s most advanced indoor crash-safety research facilities – the world’s first indoor multi-directional crash-test safety facility and an Automotive Safety Research Facility. The Honda indoor crash test safety facility enables Honda to conduct crash tests from a variety of directions, at various speeds, and between vehicles of different sizes. In fact, all Honda models have been put through vigorous testings for frontal, side and rear crash at the facility. This multi-directional test capability is key to better understanding, designing, and protecting against the consequences of real-world collisions.

Besides the multi-directional crash tests, Honda was also the first automaker in the world to develop pedestrian crash test dummies. The dummies are designed to replicate the behavior of the human body in a collision to help with analyzing the effects accidents have on the human body and with identifying locations of damage to vehicles.

Both R&D centers are able to provide Honda with a deeper understanding of what happens in real-world collisions as the basis for developing new technologies that enhance safety. This is a strong reflection of Honda’s commitment in providing safety for everyone—that means crash protection not only for its own drivers and passengers, but also for the occupants of other vehicles, and injury mitigation for pedestrians. Honda is dedicated in identifying and implementing advanced designs and features that will help to enhance the safety of vehicles on the road.

Honda’s LaneWatch Camera system which received an award under the Safety Technology category is another of Honda’s driver-assistive visibility technology which is currently available in the Honda Accord 2.4 VTi-L. The LaneWatch Camera system is a blind spot camera at the passenger side mirror which is activated when the left signal is indicated and enhances the view of passenger side traffic.

“At Honda, we have a dream. We dream of a collision-free mobile society where our customers and everyone sharing the road, can safely and confidently enjoy the freedom of mobility. We are dedicated to identifying and implementing safety improvements through vehicle technologies, safety education and telecommunication networks that can connect everyone sharing the road. This dream is summed up in our Honda Global Safety Slogan, “Safety for Everyone” where we ultimately can help people to realize the joy and freedom of a mobile and sustainable society where people can truly enjoy life,” added Mr. Ueno.

Inokom Assembles And Exports Hyundai Elantra To Thailand

INOKOM Corporation Sdn Bhd (Inokom), which has sealed a deal with Hyundai Motor (Thailand) Co. Ltd. (HMC Thailand), will assemble and export 1,000 units of the Elantra, Hyundai’s popular C-segment passenger car to Thailand in the first year.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony - L-R Hideki Yanagisawa, Rizal Jailan, HK Kim

Currently, the Elantra Nu1.8L is the only model that is being exported to Thailand. HMC Thailand offers three versions of the Elantra 1.8L in Thailand namely the 1.8 GLS Navi, 1.8 GLE and 1.8 GL. The Elantra 1.8L is in fact the first mass-oriented passenger car product to be offered to Thai consumers by Hyundai Motor (Thailand).

Inokom, a subsidiary of Sime Darby Motors, started assembling and exporting the first 200 units of the Hyundai Elantra since June this year. It has just rolled out another 200 units, which will be shipped to Thailand in early September. The number of units for export to Thailand is expected to increase in tandem with market demand as the Malaysian-assembled model is being priced cheaper due to the ASEAN Free Trade Area Agreement (AFTA).

“With the introduction of this new Inokom-assembled Elantra in Thailand, we expect its popularity to soar rapidly following the competitive pricing resulting from the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA) scheme,” said Mr Hideki Yanagisawa of Hyundai Motor (Thailand).  The introductory prices for the Elantra now start from THB749,000 for the entry 1.8 GL automatic. The mid-range 1.8 GLE and the top-end 1.8 GLS Navi are introduced at THB819,000 and THB898,000 respectively

“Though this is our first collaboration with Inokom, we look forward to future collaborations and possibly, for the other Hyundai models as well,” added Mr Yanagisawa.

According to Inokom’s Managing Director, En. Rizal Jailan, the collaboration with Hyundai Motor (Thailand) could open up more export business opportunities for Inokom, especially for locally assembled Hyundai models.

“We have proven our capabilities and we have vast experience in producing high quality vehicles. We place emphasis on quality, productivity and efficiency and this will ensure that we remain competitive in both the domestic and export markets. We are confident that our track record and reputation in producing quality vehicles will help the product’s success in Thailand.,” said En Rizal.

Official Rollout of the Hyundai Elantra for export (L-R Hideki Yanagisawa, Rizal Jailan and HK Kim)

He added that Inokom was looking forward to a long-term working relationship with HMC Thailand and also actively looking and evaluating other business opportunities in the ASEAN market.

With the export initiative, Inokom hopes to further cement its support for the new National Automotive Policy (NAP), by developing new vendors and increasing the participation of existing local vendors.

Inokom’s vehicle assembly plant, which measures 100 acres of built-up area out of 200 acres of land, has an output capacity of 27,000 CKD (Complete Knock Down) vehicles a year. Apart from the Elantra, Inokom also assembles the 7-seater Santa Fe SUV and compact passenger car i10 for the domestic market that is distributed by Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors.

Audi introducing 48 volts electrical system for better power and efficiency

Audi is to upgrade part of its vehicle electrical system from twelve to 48 volts. The move represents another technical building block for facilitating the integration of new automotive technologies while increasing the power and efficiency of its cars.

IMG_4252.JPG

“We are using the full bandwidth of electrification in our drive principles strategy. Running part of the vehicle electrical system at 48 volts plays a central role in this,” commented Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at Audi. “It enables us to make more energy available. That paves the way for new technologies with which we can make our cars more sporty, more efficient and more convenient to use.”

Audi recently showcased the scope of the 48‑volt electrical system with the technology demonstrators Audi A6 TDI concept and RS 5 TDI concept. Both models are fitted with an electrically powered compressor. This operates independently of the engine load and therefore fundamentally improves the acceleration performance. 48‑volt technology is moreover ideal for realizing convenience systems for dynamic chassis control. Audi will shortly be unveiling a variety of applications in this field.

The current state of the art technology has taken 12‑volt electrical systems to their very limits. Especially at low temperatures, all the various static‑load consumers can account for the entire power generated by the alternator, which can deliver up to three kilowatts. The battery power is no longer capable of meeting the demands of new, dynamic‑load consumers such as high‑performance electric compressors.

The solution is a second subsidiary electrical system running at 48 volts, to complement the 12‑volt power supply. The higher voltage means smaller cable cross-sections are needed; this translates into lighter cable harnesses with lower power dissipation. The 48‑volt electrical system features new storage technologies and delivers much more power than the 12‑volt system with lead batteries. That makes it an important element of the Audi strategy of electrifying various stages of the drivetrain. The Group’s developers have already come up with a scalable platform concept, including a version that incorporates the electrically powered compressor.

In currently the highest development version, a compact lithium‑ion battery supplies 48 volts as the energy source during engine‑off phases; a DC/DC converter integrates the 12‑volt electrical system. The lithium‑ion battery operates in conjunction with a new, efficiency-optimized alternator that qualifies the drivetrain as a mild hybrid. Within this concept there are diverse ways of starting, controlling and deactivating the combustion engine as needed. The powerful alternator achieves an energy recovery output of ten kilowatts, far more than is possible at present. That adds up to a saving of up to ten grams of CO2 per kilometer (16.1 g/mi), equivalent to around 0.4 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (62.1 miles).

12-year old wins a brand new XC60 with hole-in-one

At the recent 40th RSGC Ladies Amateur Open Championship, held at the Royal Selangor Golf Club, Natasha Oon, a 12-year old golfer, became the envy of everyone when she won a brand new Volvo XC60 T5 worth RM288,888 by notching a hole-in-one on the first day of the Championship!

A delighted Oon quipped, “I didn’t realise that I scored a hole-in-one. Honestly, I was just trying to do my best (in the Championship).”

What happened next was nothing short of adorable – Oon brought her mother, Yenni Hasnawi, to the XC60 T5 on display and said, “this is the car that you will use to drive me to school every day.”

Oon’s hole-in-one is a remarkable feat that was only achieved at this particular Championship, a good 15 years ago.

The hole-in-one prize was sponsored by Volvo Car Malaysia’s authorised dealer, Federal Auto Cars.

The XC60 T5 is powered by the 4-cylinder Drive-E engine which produces 245hp at 5,500rpm and a maximum torque 350Nm at 1,500-4,800rpm. Whilst the engine offers greater output than the previous generation, it still retains class-leading fuel consumption figures for petrol engines in the segment and improved CO2 emissions at a 157g/km.

Available from RM288,888, the XC60 T5 showcases a new hood shape and chrome bar grille which emphasizes the car’s width, together with prominent horizontal lines that will visually connect the car to the road. The tailpipes are now integrated with the diffuser and act as a visual.
