2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia – Round 6 Results

The guest driver Allan Simonsen took victory in Round 6 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia today after a monumental charge through the entire 27-strong field.  Second was BBTs Davide Rizzo, followed across the line by Team Betterlife’s Wang Jian Wei of China. Both drivers led the race at one stage, and both had looked good to take the win.

In Class B, Wayne Shen of Modena Motorsports took the victory, with Seminole Racing Team’s Egidio Perfetti second and Francis Tjia of OpenRoad Racing taking his second podium finish of the weekend.

Despite finishing in 11th in Round 6, PICC Team StarChase driver Alexandre Imperatori retains his grip on the overall championship race with 106 points, with reigning champion Keita Sawa of LKM Racing Team second on 69.  Benjamin Rouge of Team Yongda Dongfang and Tung Ho-Pin of Budweiser Team StarChase are tied in 4th position, each with 60 points.  In Class B, Perfetti retains the lead with a six point margin over Shen, with Francis Tjia third.

Simonsen was understandably thrilled with the win:  “I didn’t finish the first race, so started 27th. I didn’t think it was possible to go from 27th to 1st, but I never gave up.  The car felt good, and the wet suited it 100%.  I pushed probably 110%, and went off the track several times I think.  As the track started to dry, it wasn’t as fast but I could see from the pit boards that I was in a position to challenge for a win.  It feels really good, and this is a fantastic championship!”.

For Rizzo, this was his first ever race in the wet, and he admitted to some trepidation as he saw the rain begin to fall:  “My start wasn’t good and I lost a couple of places, but then I started to push – more than the limit. By the end I was on the limit with the tyres, so didn’t want to risk it.”

Wang Jian Wei was pleased to finish on the podium after an incredibly eventful race where he had looked good for the win:  “I wanted to push to extend my lead, but I braked late.  That would have been OK in the dry, but in the wet conditions, I went off.  I worked my way back though, so I’m happy to take 3rd.”

Wayne Shen was grateful to his engineer for finding him the perfect set up for the conditions, but Perfetti had mixed feelings about the Ordos weekend:  “I had a few problems with set up, and I seem to have developed a tendency to spin – 360 degrees!”

With the reverse grid once again resulting in some truly phenomenal track action, there was yet more drama as the heavens opened before the start and Round 6 was declared a wet race.

Wang got away well from pole, defending from an aggressive Adderly Fong, who was then side-by-side with Budweiser Team StarChase driver Tung Ho-Pin as the pair faced down for second, with Tung prevailing.  Martin Ragginger, winner of Round 5, and championship leader Imperatori were right on the back of reigning champion Keita Sawa in 4th, allowing Wang and Tung to pull away at the front.

Tung quickly caught up to Wang but behind them, Fong had dived past Sawa and was now being chased by the daunting trio of Sawa, Ragginger and Imperatori.  Rizzo, though, had begun his charge and overtook first Imperatori then Ragginger, before homing in on Sawa, lights flashing.  Lap 4 saw Rizzo get by Sawa to go 4th, but the Italian already had Fong firmly in his sights and made his move the following lap.

Ragginger was piling the pressure onto Sawa while Imperatori did likewise to the Austrian, with Pekka Saarinen keeping the front-runners well within reach.  Then disaster struck as Ragginger and Imperatori made contact and spun. Both re-joined, but the incident had put them down the order and they eventually finished 9th and 11th respectively.

Wang had once again pulled out a gap from Tung, and had a margin of more than two seconds by the end of lap 5.  However, Rizzo was like a bullet, and overtook Tung on lap 6 to go 2nd.  While all eyes were on the pair, like a bolt from the blue came Simonsen, who had been picking his way through the high-speed pack and suddenly leapt past Sawa and Saarinen to go 5th.

As the track began to dry, the handling of many of the front-running cars began to change, handing a new set of challenges to the field.

Next it was the turn of Team Basetex’ Zhang Da Sheng to shine, and the Chinese driver closed in on Sawa, overtaking with impressive precision to go 6th.

Out in front, Wang was working hard to extend his lead, and had built a margin of more than three seconds from Rizzo mid-way through the race.  His efforts were reduced to nothing in a second though, as a small error in braking was punished harshly.  He spun, but managed to control the car and rejoin the race ahead of Saarinen.  That handed the lead to Rizzo, with Tung, Simonsen, Wang, Saarinen, Zhang and Sawa all still fighting hard.

Lap 10 saw Zhang get by Tung before running wide and rejoining behind Wang, who was attacking Tung hard.  Tung defended well, but at the front of the pack, Simonsen had decimated Rizzo’s margin, and overtook the Italian to grab the lead.  Wang finally got the better of Tung to take 3rd before the flag.  Zhang also got by Tung before the finish line to take 4th.

Despite the challenges of the Ordos track, wet conditions, and a 27-strong field, all but one of the cars completed the 14 lap race, testament to the extraordinarily high standard of racing the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia has attained.  The weekend represented an extreme test of both man and machine, and the field more than rose to the challenge.

The incredible tenth Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season continues at the end of the August when it leaves China for the first time this year with Rounds 7 and 8 at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit from August 30 to September 2.  As this weekend proved, with such a competitive field, predictions are pointless as the form book could well be turned on its head once again.

2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia – Round 5 Results

Team Eagle – Jiejun & Junbaojie driver Martin Ragginger of Austria tamed arguably the most difficult circuit on the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia calendar to take victory in Round 5 at the Inner Mongolian Ordos International Circuit.  Second across the line was championship leader Alexandre Imperatori of PICC Team Starchase, with reigning champion Keita Sawa of LKM Racing Team earning the final podium spot.

In Class B, talented Singaporean Yuey Tan took his first ever Porsche Carrera Cup Asia victory in the category for his Dorr McElrea Racing team.  Tan drove superbly, overtaking first Asia Racing Team’s Huang Chu Han and then OpenRoad Racing’s Francis Tjia to take the lead.

After five races, Imperatori maintains his position at the top of the championship leaderboard with a 22-point margin over second placed Sawa, and Ragginger leaps up the table from 6th to 3rd.

Ragginger was thrilled to have put the bad luck which had plagued him earlier in the season firmly behind him, and was full of praise for his team having started the weekend with a new chassis after the multiple-car incident in Zhuhai:  “Thank you to my team and all the mechanics who worked so hard to bring my car back to life!  Off the start, I was on the limit and knew Alex (Imperatori) was there somewhere.  We both controlled the race, and after seven laps had a good lead.  I just kept focused and concentrated on controlling the race and not making any mistakes. For us, this is a great victory.”

For Imperatori, who had won every race this season, second place was an unfamiliar position, but even before the start he was focused on championship points:  “We can’t have it all the time, and the competition is very strong this year.  We never expected to win all the races.  I had a good start and tried to get up on the inside, but Martin rightly closed the door. In the first part of the race, I was able to stay with him, but it is very hard to overtake on this track and he was very strong.  We brought it home and took the championship points, so I’m happy with that.”

Sawa had a tough race, and was struggling to maintain consistency.  For all three, Round 6 will be an even mightier challenge.

After the race, Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila, who had crossed the line in 4th, was handed a 30-second regulation infringement penalty which demoted him to 11th.   With the top eight reversed on the grid for the start of Round 6, Team Betterlife’s Wang Jian Wai starts from pole position, with  guest driver and series newcomer Adderly Fong alongside. On the second row are Davide Rizzo of BBT and Pekka Saarinen of PS Racing.

Francis Tjia was another driver happy to put his unlucky season start behind him in Round 5, but was quick to admit that Tan had just been too quick for him.  Huang, meanwhile, was plagued with mechanical glitches, but for Tan it was a victory he had worked long and hard for:  “I’ve been competing for four years and this is my first win.  I’m really pleased to have taken this victory, particularly on a circuit like Ordos.  Francis and Huang were battling it out, and that is what we wanted.  I was patient and just picked them off one by one. The car was great!”

Ragginger made a brilliant getaway from pole, holding Imperatori at bay, with Sawa, Avila and Team Yongda Dongfang’s Benjamin Rouget following.  Early retirements were BBT’s Zheng Ting and OpenRoad by ART Motorsports’ Marcel Tjia, who suffered a puncture.  By the end of lap 2 of the 14-lap race, Ragginger had pulled out a lead of more than a second, but Imperatori stayed with him.

The early stages also saw the retirement of Team Carrera Cup Asia guest driver Allan Simonsen of Denmark, who had been running 8th overall, and Rouget.  For Rouget, who had been 3rd in the championship points, the retirement dealt a heavy blow to his title aspirations.

In Class B, it was points-leader Egidio Perfetti of Seminole Racing Team who was leading the pack, until a spin put him down the order and Huang took over the lead until lap 8, when Francis Tjia stormed past.  Perfetti eventually crossed the line 17th, but maintains his position at the top of the Class B championship leaderboard.

The closing stages of the race saw PS Racing’s Pekka Saarinen increase his race-long pressure on Budweiser Team Starchase driver Tung Ho-Pin, who was suffering from a bout of stomach flu, and Fong close up to Rizzo, but neither was able to get by.  However, Tan did find a way to pass on the 3.751 km track, and dived past Huang to go second in Class B, before making his move on Tjia just two laps from the chequered flag to take victory.

2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia – Rounds 5 & 6 Pre-Race Highlights

Before this, we have no idea where is the Ordos International Circuit in Inner Mongolia, China. For now, we learned that this circuit in China is unique with combination of elevations, tricky bends and constantly-changing surface conditions make it the ultimate test for every racing driver.

For this time around, the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Round 5 & 6 will be happening at Ordos International Circuit from July 6 to 8, 2012.

Arriving with a score to settle with the 3.751km track is championship leader Alexandre Imperatori of PICC Team StarChase. The Shanghai-based Swiss had a tumultuous outing in 2011 when the series made its debut there, with an incident and a resulting penalty decimating his points advantage at a crucial time in the season.

For reigning champion LKM Racing Team’s Keita Sawa and Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila, currently second and fourth on the leaderboard respectively, it was a different story, with the pair taking a win apiece and Avila celebrating a maiden victory with his China Porsche dealer team.

The prospect of racing at the Ordos track is particularly daunting for the drivers for whom it will be new, such as Team Yongda Dongfang’s Benjamin Rouget of France who lies third in the championship race, but with the likelihood of track surface conditions changing lap-by-lap, previous experience could count for little.

Fifth overall in the championship standings, and leading the Class B category by 12 points, is Egidio Perfetti of the Seminole Racing Team.  New to the series this season, Perfetti has made an astonishing debut and it will be fascinating to see if he continues his impressive form in Ordos.

Second in Class B is Wayne Shen of Modena Motorsport, who earned a podium finish in Ordos last season, however it was BBT driver Davide Rizzo who proved unbeatable.  Rizzo took Class B pole position followed by two emphatic victories in the category, although this year the talented Italian will be competing for overall honours.

Returning to the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia for Rounds 5 and 6 is Dane Allan Simonsen.  Simonsen impressed in the opening round of the 2012 season by finishing 3rd at the Shanghai International Circuit in April.

2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Round 3 Highlights @ Zhuhai

Many of you have been asking me about the live action of the multi car crash at first T1 during Round 3 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, which happening on last weekend at the Zhuhai International Circuit. Anyway, the article goes here, if you miss it.

Appreciatively, the video is compiled and now is up on the YouTube by PCCA. In case you missed the action, check out Round 3 highlights now!

Imperatori Champion for Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Round 4

The Round 4 of Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, Alexandre Imperatori of PICC Team StarChase continued his aim towards the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia title by taking his fourth victory in as many races.  Despite starting from 8th, under the top eight reverse grid regulation, he not only powered his way into the lead mid-way through the 12-lap race, but had pulled out a margin of almost two seconds by the chequered flag at the Zhuhai International Circuit.

Second across the line after a truly thrilling race was reigning champion Keita Sawa of the LKM Racing Team, who had overcome a disastrous qualifying session to charge to 7th in Round 3, putting him alongside pole-sitter Davide Rizzo of BBT for the start of Round 4.  Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila took the final podium place, an impressive result having started from the 4th row of the grid.

Egidio Perfetti of the Seminole Racing Team continued his impressive series debut with his third successive Class B win, with Modena Motorsports’ Wayne Shen in second, and another newcomer, Huang Chu Han in third.

Imperatori now has a 20 point lead at the top of the overall championship standings from Sawa, with Benjamin Rouget in third.  Perfetti’s brilliant results give him a 13 point lead from Wayne Shen in Class B, with Zheng Ting third.

Said Imperatori, who repeated his astonishing performance in Shanghai where he also thundered his way from 8th on the grid to snatch victory:  “I was pushing very hard and on the attack right from the start.  It’s important to do as much as you can as soon as possible before anyone has the chance to pull out a gap.  We honestly didn’t expect to be able to win as it’s very difficult to overtake here, but it went perfectly.”

Avila was delighted with his points haul from two podium finishes, and glad he had resisted the temptation to push too hard to overtake Sawa in the closing stages: “Davide (Rizzo) gave us a really good battle, but I was on new tyres and was pushing really hard.  I was looking at overtaking Sawa but I made a mistake on the last corner which could have cost me the race, and we need the points.”

Rizzo got away well from pole and held the lead from the charging pack, with Team BetterLife’s Wang Jian Wei mounting an early assault on Team Carrera Cup Asia guest driver Matthew Marsh, getting by to go third on the opening lap.  Imperatori and Avila too were locked in battle from the go, and made contact going into Turn 1, neither sustaining damage.

At the end of lap 1, Rizzo held the lead from Sawa, who was hot on his heels, with Wang, Marsh, Team Yongda Dongfang’s Benjamin Rouget in hot pursuit.  Imperatori had begun his climb through the field and was already up to 6th.  Lap 3 saw first Sawa make his move on Rizzo to grab the lead, then Imperatori storm up to 2nd in the order, with Avila in 4th but closing in fast on the Italian.

Wang meanwhile was also on a charge, determined to get by Rouget, but it was all for naught when he flat-spotted his tyres and retired with a puncture.

Imperatori was unstoppable, closing in to Sawa and diving by to take the lead he would hold until the flag.  Next it was Avila looming large in the mirrors of the reigning champion, the Macau racer having finally got by Rizzo after a superb battle.  Sawa held firm though, and with his priorities set on championship points, Avila settled for 3rd.

The next scheduled race for Rounds 5 and 6 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will be held at Ordos International Circuit in Inner Mongolia on 6-8 July 2012.
