In early of March 2012, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia has officially launched the new Mitsubishi Triton VGT in Kuching. In essence, the turbine is replaced with Variable Geometry Turbo for optimal turbo aspect ratio at all range. However, the upgrades are not limited to the turbo itself but also the transmission.

The new Triton VGT is identical to the unit of the recently upgraded Pajero Sport VGT SUV. The diesel engine remained 2.5-litre capacity. However, with the VGT and new engine management, maximum power is significantly boosted to 178 PS at 4,000 rpm, while maximum torque rises to 350 Nm from 1,800rpm to 3,500rpm.

From the exterior, the tough and stylish looks of the Triton has been further enhanced with a front bumper extender, matte black roll bar and sporty 17-inch alloy wheels. The new Triton VGT is Bluetooth and iPod compatible. Parking is also made simpler with front corner sensors with display visual.

“The Triton, widely acknowledged as one of the best handling pick-up trucks in the market, has been a great success since its debut in Malaysia in 2006. The Triton created a new trend with the bold ruggedness of a powerful engine combined with original styling, ride comfort, spacious cabin, and enhanced safety features. And to date, it has found more than 30,000 proud owners. Being the most powerful in its class, the new Triton VGT is set to increase the Triton’s popularity,” said Tetsuya Oda, Chief Executive Officer of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.

Besides the new engine, the transmission for the new Triton VGT has been upgraded as well. The pickup now comes standard with a 5-speed auto gearbox with Sports Mode instead of 4-speed. The Sports Mode allows manual selection of gears for better control, giving drivers improved on-road handling and rugged off-road performance.

The fuel consumption for the new 178PS Triton VGT is pretty remarkable. Based on the given data, the new Triton VGT consumes 14.4 km/litre at a 90 km/h cruise.

There are 3 colour choices are available – White Solid, Black Mica and Cool Silver Metallic. The fully imported Triton VGT is priced at RM105,997.10 OTR with insurance in Peninsular Malaysia. The new Triton VGT comes standard with 3 years warranty and 2 year free maintenance package from Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.

Offering a wider option for customers, the new Triton VGT will complement the current Triton line-up, consisting of the Triton 2.5-litre 4×4 with automatic and manual transmissions, Triton Standard 2.5-litre 4×4 manual and Triton Lite 2.5-litre 4×2 manual.
